About Pyrrhia
Founding of the School
Agate Mountain Academy was founded by a rogue IceWing animus named Ptarmigan, who wanted to give the Gift of Knowledge not only to their own tribe but to all of Pyrrhia. To accomplish this, Ptarmigan fled the Ice Kingdom and used a significant amount of animus power to create a self-sustained, magic school at Jade Mountain. After establishing the school, Ptarmigan vanished, and it is unknown what became of her. Ptarmigan’s fate is a favorite piece of gossip and rumor among students, with theories ranging from tragic tales of justice at the hands of the IceWing queen, or that her ghost continues to run the school. The school appears to actually be run by the rotating staff of teachers, who mysteriously seem to only be available when needed.
Canon DivergenceAll events leading up to the War of Sandwing Succession and it’s culmination remain in place. Rather than being founded by the Dragonets of Destiny, the school had previously existed but was hidden by animus magic as a defensive measure. Once peace was restored, the school revealed itself. As a gesture of good faith, each tribe agreed to send representative students to the school.
LocationAs implied by the name, the school is located at the base of Jade Mountain. Given Ptarmigan’s background, it looks rather as if you took the unmelting ice palace from the Ice Kingdom and attached it to the side of a mountain. The “ice” portion of the school transitions into a network of tunnels similar to the canon Jade Mountain Academy. For the most part, assume the dorms are on the cave side and classes are held throughout. A river from higher up the mountain flows into a large lake adjacent to the school, and there are plenty of forested areas nearby for hunting.
In addition to the classrooms, there is also a large entry for arriving guests; a meal area stocked with fruit, vegetables, and livestock; dormitories; and a large library. Both students and teachers are given a map of the school upon arrival.
CourseworkClasses run the gamut from your typical coursework like math, history, art, etc. through more dragon specific things like hunting and self defense. There is a wide variety of classes, and often if there is a skill you want to learn, the faculty will do their best to accommodate if there is enough support.. Teachers can fill in for any class, even if it is not their specific subject, which can make for some interesting classes. There are a few NPC teachers you are welcome to reference or add to your threads as neede. Some ideas include:
Exuberance - an unusually knowledgeable RainWing who seems to know about every subject. Her scales change color depending on the class subject.
Moss - a MudWing known for his calm, soothing demeanor and patience with his students. Often appears to teach art classes.
Snake - a severe and overbearing SandWing who’s scales have a slightly greenish tint, generally considered to be the opposite of Moss. He tends to be harsher on anyone he deems to be a “problem student.”
Winglets/DormsYour winglet is basically your school assigned group of friends. Your ‘hogwarts house’, if you will. Typically winglets will attend classes together, room together, and generally be expected to hang out. It’s not a requirement, but could be a good way to build CR quickly. For now, Winglets are capped at 5 characters each. If there is a space in a winglet you may request a specific one in your app, otherwise they are randomly assigned. New Winglets will be added or removed as needed to try and maintain a balance.
Each winglet has a dorm/sleeping cave with a bed suitable to each dragon assigned to it (ie. hammocks for RainWings, sandpits for SandWings, etc.). Caves are rectangular, with two beds per long wall, one on the end, and a wall with the doorway and shelves for scrolls and other knicknacks. Students are permitted to bring items from home with them to personalize their space. Teachers each have their own rooms throughout the school.
